Shopping in a New Town

I moved to the greater (not so great as it used to be) Detroit area from a city of 75,000. Harding’s was the local grocery store that offered organic produce, a good variety of specialty food items, fresh bakery items made on site, great beer selection, and much more. Like many things, we only realize how really good it was when we’re stuck somewhere else and expect other grocery stores to be similiar.
So this morning I go out to pick up a few items for company. Kroger had no Russet organic potatoes. Nor do they have no growth hormone, no antibiotic eggs. Forget about ever finding Miso soup mix. And no Harps or Bass beers! This grocery store is situated in an upscale neighborhood. What gives?
So I go to the big produce store – deli counter, bakery items (no good baguettes, though). They don’t even have any organic potatoes.
Okay, now maybe I have to go visit Trader Joe’s. It’s located at the purgatory intersection – you wait forever. But it is early morning so things should flow well. Here I find much of what I’m looking for. Excellent looking breads, good variety of eggs, miso soup and organic potatoes. I’ll have to go to Meijer’s for beer, which I can get next time I need prescriptions filled.
Perhaps the university population is why Harding’s was so much better. I still had to go to some other stores on occasion, specialty stores, but Harding’s had so much of what I wanted. I’m curious to see if this Meijer store will have much in their International aisle.
And to think that 25 years ago it was tough getting anything other than overprocessed white bread. So many of us have become more discerning; yet so many more eat increasing amounts of crap.

Chicken Thoughts

At The Water Cooler

I wondered why the chickens won’t walk in snow. They won’t even walk down the coop ramp if it was snow covered, and fly out instead. They can’t see! All that white makes it look like nothing is there.
They also won’t wander out of their pen if the ground is snow covered.
